JSPCA PRESS RELEASE

September 2005

JSPCA ANIMALS' SHELTER NEWS UP DATE

A heartfelt thanks goes to everybody who has supported the JSPCA Animals’ Shelter this year, especially through the recent publicised struggle with funding that the Shelter experienced in the beginning of the year.

Summer time is always a very busy period for the JSPCA Animals’ Shelter; the kennels and cattery have been fully booked throughout the school holiday periods and the re-homing wings are overwhelmed, especially with cats of all ages, colours and breeds that are looking for new homes.

The JSPCA Animals’ Shelter continues to investigate reported cases of animal cruelty and works closely with the States Veterinary Officer and other relevant Island authorities to ensure that the appropriate courses of action are taken.  The recent successful prosecution of a local farmer who was convicted of 16 charges of cruelty to animals and hence was fined £1600 and disqualified from keeping pigs and dogs for the next five years highlights the benefits of such a working relationship.

Naturally, fund raising, which is fundamental to the continued survival of the Shelter, is always on-going, with fresh ideas for different methods of raising money being most welcome.  The recent Radier Manor Open Day, kindly organised by FOTAS (Friends of the Animals’ Shelter, a volunteer fund raising group) was a huge success and not only helped raise money for the Shelter, but also assisted in increasing the Open Day’s visitors awareness to the role of the Animals’ Shelter and the services that it offers.

The Animals’ Shelter has only been able to achieve its excellent standards of care for the animals today through the generous donations and legacies from the members of the public of Jersey.  It is purely through this generous financial support that the Shelter can continue to develop and improve its facilities, which enable it to care for the injured, stray and unwanted animals on the Island.

Once again, many thanks for everyone’s much appreciated support; every donation we receive towards the care of the animals in our care is very gratefully received.
