JSPCA PRESS RELEASE

August 2007

ANIMALS IN TIMES OF CONFLICT EVENT

On 5th August 2007, next to the War Tunnels, the JSPCA Animals’ Shelter held a special display focusing on the plight of animals in the Channel Island of Jersey during the World War Two Occupation from 1940 to 1945 and the role of the Animals’ Shelter at that time.  There was also the opportunity to see some military vehicles, (from the Jersey Military Vehicle Club), such as the Fox, Scorpion, Willis jeep, Gamma Goat, Ferret and the classic Hummer.

The aim of this project was to not only will highlight animal issues specifically in the Channel Islands during the WW2 Occupation, but to also emphasize the remarkable work that animals have undertaken, and are still undertaking, during times of conflict, for example the sniffer dogs used for mine detection or the work of the rescue dogs in identifying survivors in collapsed buildings.

A big "thank you" goes to the support shown by Mr Richard Le Brocq and his fellow colleagues from the Jersey Military Vehicle Club and to all the visitors to the event and their kind donations which will help the JSPCA Animals’ Shelter continue its work of caring for the injured, lost, stray and unwanted animals on the Island.
