PRESS RELEASE
February
2006
Mr Alfonso Luis has been given three months to remove his
pigs from a field in St Saviour and has been instructed to remove the
unauthorised pig housing that has been erected in the field.
The pig arcs that he built on the land without permission are
sited on a sloping orchard and the planning application for these arcs was
refused on 22nd February 2006 because of concerns about possible
ground water pollution and the effect on the surrounding residential area
Mr Alfonso Luis who has been banned from keeping both rabbits and sheep under the Protection of Animals (Jersey) Law 1980, has already been refused planning permission (in October 2005) to build an intensive pig unit on the St Saviour site. However, since December, and despite this first planning refusal, he has been keeping pigs in three arcs on the St Saviour field.
The Planning Application Panel expressed a desire to have the arcs removed as soon as possible, but have granted Mr Alfonso Luis three months in the interest of animal welfare.
