JSPCA PRESS RELEASE

November 2005

STATES AGREE AMENDMENT TO THE ANIMAL WELFARE (JERSEY) LAW 2004

Finally, the long awaited new Animal Welfare (Jersey) Law 2004, has been discussed in the States of Jersey and a necessary amendment involving the appropriate authorisation of appointed Inspectors to investigate matters concerning animal welfare and neglect issues has been agreed. This hopefully means that the new Law is a step closer to being enacted.

On 1st November 2005, the States approved the amendment to the new Animal Welfare (Jersey) Law proposed by the Economic Development Committee, which would allow Inspectors to carry out investigations as long as they were not engaged in similar activities.

The new Animal Welfare (Jersey) Law 2004 is much more comprehensive than the old Protection of Animals (Jersey) Law 1980 and it is hoped that this new Legislation will transform the husbandry standards and living conditions of Jersey’s animals, ultimately improving their health, welfare and well being.
