PRESS RELEASE
March 2007
Pet Micro-chipping Promotion
Losing your pet is a devastating experience.
Micro-chipping
your pet will help to ensure that should your pet go missing, and is found
and scanned, it will quickly be reunited with you.
During the month of April 2007, the JSPCA Animals’ Shelter, with New Era Veterinary Hospital, is promoting responsible pet ownership through micro-chipping as the preferred means of pet identification.
Micro-chipping is a permanent method of identification. Micro-chipping is a simple process involving injecting a small micro-chip about the size of a grain of rice under the skin at the back of the neck or between the animal’s shoulder blades. The micro-chip contains a unique number that can be read using a special hand held scanner. The owner’s personal contact details are stored on a central computer database, which can be accessed, 24 hours a day, by the appropriate authorities on identification of the unique micro-chip number.
It is a requirement by Law in Jersey that all dogs aged 6 months or more must be licensed in the Parish in which the owner is resident. In Jersey it is also a legal requirement that all dogs must have a dog tag on its collar displaying its name, the name of the owner and a contact number and address. These details will be used to help quickly trace the owner of any straying or lost dogs.
However, micro-chipping is another recommended and ideal way of identifying dogs, as well as other animals such as pet rabbits, cats and ferrets. Micro-chipping is a perfect way of identifying cats as they can often loose their collars.
Pet dogs, cats, rabbits and ferrets can be micro-chipped at the JSPCA Animals' Shelter during this promotional period at the following times ONLY, although an appointment must first be made by telephoning the JSPCA Animals' Shelter reception on 724331:
Tuesday 10th April 2007: 10am - 11.30am
Tuesday 17th April 2007: 10am - 11.30am
Thursday 19th April 2007: 10am - 11.30am
Tuesday 24th April 2007: 10am - 11.30am
Ensure
that your animal is micro-chipped in case it goes missing.
Micro-chipping is inexpensive, quick and gives owners added peace of mind that their pets will be quickly reunited with them should they go missing and then be found.
