JSPCA SEASHORE COUNTRYSIDE CODE

The Seashore:

The Island of Jersey has a beautiful coastline which is of international conservation importance, hence the coastal zone of Jersey is protected from inappropriate development through various States of Jersey policies.  The Jersey fisheries resources also support a buoyant local fisheries industry.

The Coastline of Jersey has some magnificent and varied scenery including sea cliffs, rocky shores, sand dunes and rock pools, in addition to a wonderful mix of wildlife.

The ecosystems of the seashore habitats and coastal wildlife can be very delicate and it is important that they are carefully preserved and looked after.  Members of the public can help by taking care to ensure that these wildlife species and habitats are not damaged or disturbed.  The Seashore Code explains how the coast and its wildlife can be enjoyed without causing it any harm.

Seashore wildlife:

There are many different types of little creatures that can be found on the seashore.  Many can be found hiding under rocks in the seaweed or in the sand.  When exploring the beach or rock pools, always remember:

• leave the creatures where you find them.

• Be very careful if touching delicate animals

• Carefully lift and replace any rocks you move – the little animals need them for shelter.

• Leave the seaweed in place

• Tread carefully through rock pools.

Take photos and not living souvenirs!

Souvenirs such as shells, urchins, starfish and corals are often sold at the seaside.  Many of these animals are collected live and illegal trade threatens some protected species of marine wildlife.  If you desire a souvenir:

• Take only photographs for lasting memories and leave only footprints

• Avoid buying dried starfish, exotic sea shells or coral

• If collecting empty shells from the beach, only take a few

Wildlife:

Seabirds, seals, oystercatchers, egrets and other sea birds are all very interesting to watch and observe, but can be very easily disturbed by human presence.  When watching wild animals and birds, remember:

• Watch from a distance, through binoculars perhaps

• Keep your dog on the lead near birds and other wild animals

• If you are in a boat come across a groups of dolphins, reduce your speed or stop and wait for them to pass

• Do not get too close to wild animals or birds – seals may bite and some seabirds can also give painful bites.
