REQUEST FOR HELP - JERSEY RED SQUIRRELS NEED YOU!

The JSPCA Animals' Shelter is asking Islanders and any visitors to the Island to help the JSPCA in monitoring the red squirrels.  By recording where squirrels are seen, whether Islanders are feeding squirrels, the location of squirrel sightings and what colour the squirrels' coats are, it is hoped that an up-to-date Island wide distribution map and population estimate can be reached.  The colour of the squirrels' coats will provide important information about their possible heritage and historical genetic make up.

Therefore, If you can spare a couple of minutes to complete this important questionnaire and send the answers to either tiffany@jspca.org.je or print out the form and post it to Tiffany Blackett, JSPCA red squirrel project, JSPCA Animals' Shelter, 89 St Saviours Road, St Helier, Jersey. JE2 4GJ, it would be very much appreciated.

Also, if you spot a sick or injured red squirrel, please call the JSPCA Animals' Shelter so that it may be collected and medically treated as appropriate, as quickly as possible.  You may also call to report the sighting of a squirrel casualties - bodies of squirrels can then be collected and post mortem examinations can be undertaken which allows us to establish and understand the health of the population.

Remember, take care when driving on Jersey roads, especially on country roads and green lanes, to avoid accidentally killing squirrels.

URGENT APPEAL

The JSPCA Animals' Shelter has seen unprecedented numbers of disclaimed animals, especially cats, over the last 9 months as the Island economy continues to suffer in the current economic climate.  This, coupled with the continued rise in energy and food costs, has led to significant demands on our resources.

If you care about animals please donate any amount that you can afford.  The Society does not receive any finding from the States of Jersey and is totally reliant on public subscription to continue its vital work.  Thank you.

Red Squirrel Disease Monitoring Programme

The JSPCA Animals' Shelter is embarking upon a study researching into the prevalence of disease in Jersey’s red squirrel population. The programme will ultimately help to improve the care, welfare and conservation of Jersey's red squirrel population.

We are asking Islanders to report all sightings of red squirrel casualties to the JSPCA reception. This is so that the bodies of squirrels seen on roads can be collected and post mortem examinations can be performed.   For more information, click here.

Beware of puppy farms

Buyer beware: puppy farms do still operate in the United Kingdom.

If considering purchasing a puppy, always remember that it is important to meet the mother of the pups and, if possible, see the rest of the litter.

Often adverts may be seen in newspapers informing the reader of a variety of different breeds of puppies for sale.  These types of adverts should be viewed with suspicion.  A variety of different breeds advertised by one vendor may have been bred at a so-called ‘puppy farm’.

The Kennel Club have produced a statement on the matter, which can be accessed by following this link: http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/item/1476.

Animal Welfare (Jersey) Law 2004 enacted on 1st February 2007

Finally, the long awaited new Animal Welfare (Jersey) Law 2004, has been given an Appointed Day Act and will come into force on 1st February 2007.

The new Animal Welfare (Jersey) Law 2004 is much more comprehensive than its predecessor, the Protection of Animals (Jersey) Law 1980, and it is hoped that this new Legislation will transform the husbandry standards and living conditions of Jersey’s animals, ultimately improving their health, welfare and well being.

Under this new Law, establishments such as pet shops, kennels, catteries and animal sanctuaries will need a licence to operate.  Failure to comply will result in fines.  All animals, including farmed animals, domestic pets and wild animal and birds will be protected by this new legislation which was passed in the States of Jersey in 2004.  For more information, click here.

Help charity with gas

The Jersey Gas Company Limited has developed a new gas cylinder retrieval scheme called "Help charity with Gas".  The Gas Company is asking for any old or unused gas cylinders to be returned to them and for each cylinder returned, the Jersey Gas Company will make a donation to charity.

The JSPCA Animals' Shelter is very grateful for support from the Jersey Gas Company through the cylinder retrieval scheme and hence through its donations to the JSPCA Animals' Shelter on behalf of customers returning gas cylinders and recommending our charity as their charity of choice for the donation.  For more information about the "Help charity with gas" scheme, please contact Jersey Gas Company at Kosangas on 01534 755566.

There are other ways that members of the public can help the JSPCA Animals' Shelter, as an alternative to making a monetary donation.  Please click here for more information.

"Send For Good" charity ecards launched

Ecards are greeting cards sent by e-mail using the Internet.  A small Jersey organisation called SendForGood.com, launched on Friday 2nd June 2006, is kindly supporting the JSPCA Animals' Shelter by listing the JSPCA Animals' Shelter amongst the charities from which the sender of a SendForGood.com ecard can select to support.  Should the JSPCA Animals' Shelter be selected by the card sender as the charity they wish to support, when the sender's ecard is sent, the ecard will contain the JSPCA Animals' Shelter mission statement and a donation to the JSPCA Animals' Shelter will then be made.

For further details on how to send your electronic greetings cards, please click here.

Jersey Bird and Poultry register

In response recent to the outbreaks of Avian Influenza in Western Europe, the States of Jersey is setting up a central register so that they are aware of where there are stocks of birds around the Island.  This will be of enormous benefit to the States, should they ever have to face an outbreak of Avian Influenza in Jersey.  For more information, click here.

Avian Influenza - 'Bird Flu'

With the current concerns about the human implications and risks of Avian Influenza following the recent outbreaks in Suffolk, the Jersey Environment and Public Services Department have issued some guidelines and advice, which includes a variety of suggested precautions that poultry farmers and bird keepers on the Island should consider taking.  For more information, click here.

Jersey Dog Mess Campaign

It is very important to ensure that all dog owners are aware of their responsibility to clean up after their dogs.  The Jersey Dog Mess Campaign is highlighting this very significant message by displaying posters around the Island and organising patrols over popular dog walking areas in the next coming weeks.  Through these patrols, members of the Jersey Dog Mess Campaign aim to raise awareness and educate people on the importance of dog owners picking up after their pets.  Remember, dog owners can be fined up to £500 for not cleaning up after your dog.

Homes wanted

As well as dogs and cats, there are lots of rabbits, guinea pigs and rodents at the JSPCA Animals' Shelter that require new homes.  For the experienced chelonian owner, there are also terrapins that require permanent, caring homes.

Our current "Animal of the Month" for re-homing is "Beauty", an adult black DSH.  Further details about  "Beauty" can be found on the "Animal of the Month" page.

For more information about our re-homing policies, or any of the animals that the JSPCA Animals' Shelter has for re-homing, please contact the JSPCA Animals' Shelter.
